blown turbo?!
« on: 24 December 2014, 09:51 »
so, was driving to milton keynes yesterday afternoon for a bit of snowboarding to get into the festive spirit and there was a knocking sound that i thought was a stone that got kicked up under my car. no problem for about 10-15 miles then when i went to overtake someone it sounded like i was driving over gravel in the road and there was little to no power.

kind of sounds like it might be the exhaust but i had a horrible feeling this morning that the turbo has gone kaput.

anyone know what the symptoms of a blown turbo might be? there's no smoke coming from out back and no engine management lights or limp modes have come on.

You really need to get a fault code scan done.

When it happened, did you notice any black/blue smoke? Or is there any at cold or warm idle?

I assume you have a 2.0 litre TSFI engine? Have you replaced the high pressure fuel pump cam follower since owning the car?

Above all else, stop using the car!

ok, update on the car. i had a mechanic look at it and apparently a bolt in the engine mount had sheered off causing the fan belt to pretty much shred to pieces, the exhaust is bent and there's also a problem with the air con as there's fluid leaking.

doesn't sound too great eh?! btw, the cam follower was replaced a week after the remap

If you're looking at a new exhaust, get a stainless steel Milltek fitted while you're doing it. The air conshould be a new compressor only hopefully.

Bad luck at this time of year, hope you sort it soon mate.

thanks man, yeah it's crap to happen right now as i've just paid for insurance, tax and an mot (luckily that was fine!) all in one hit.

my dad (who is a mechanic) is taking care of the aircon. the compressor wasn't damaged luckily and he thinks he can replace the damaged part of the hose by getting a part made up by pirtek so that should save a few bucks.

now just got to save up for a decent downpipe and sports cat as i don't really want the hassle of changing a decat every year for the mot.

other than miltek, what's a decent brand? searches keep coming up with scorpion, magnex etc but not sure what's decent and what's not. basically other than a decent long lasting exhaust that compliments my stage 1 remap i want a bit of extra audio but nothing too crazy, just a nice sound... any suggestions?

BCS Powervalve systems are the most popular over on another forum;

http://www.powervalve.co.uk/

The guy who runs the business is great, loads of reports of positive feedback and great after care, plus good prices for what the systems are. Watch some of the YouTube videos as well to view the work.

I've not heard great things about Scorpion from some folks, other brands also don't get great coverage when it's compared to Milltek. Given the chance (which I will have this year) I'd opt for the BCS system any day.
