Timing marks crank pulley and auxiliary sprocket

Hey guys I am setting my timing on my 16V KR engine, I have aligned the camshaft mark at the top, the crank is at TDC confirmed by the flywheel, crank pulley and lower cover mark, and I have aligned the crank pulley mark with the auxiliary sprocket mark.

HOWEVER

When I turn the engine over by hand, the mark on the crank pulley and auxiliary sprocket never actually line up again, they should meet again after two turns shouldn't they?

It would seem that the auxiliary sprocket (intermediate shaft) only drives the oil pump is irrelevant, however all the diagrams I have seen say you have to line these up, such as this one:

So long as my camshaft and crankshaft marks are lined up, can I forget about the intermediate shaft?

From the Bentley manual:

"The intermediate shaft, which drives only the oil pump, is driven at 60% of crankshaft speed by the camshaft drive belt."

So ti clearly doesn't need to be timed, however I am confused as to why mine has a mark on it? Perhaps it was done by a previous owner / mechanic...

On the 8v the intermediate shaft drives the distributor. So, I'm guessing now, the shaft is the same on both 8v and 16v

On a 16v its only necessary to align the crankshaft and camshaft, don't worry about the intermediate shaft. Another story on an 8v but that's irrelevant.    :smiley:

You have to align the rotar arm on the dizzy but that usually means nothing when compared to the intermediate sprocket mark. Line up everything independently and then put the belt on.

on a 16v kr motor the cam pulley and int pulley are the same so ignore the int pulley mark but the pulleys can be put on the wrong way round so check that they are correct also check the cam timing in the head, there are two 0 marks on the cam cogs that need to line up
