vwgolf mk4 alarm gremlins!!??
« on: 25 October 2014, 13:51 »
the car is an early 2002 vw golf mk4 1.6se 16v .

last night the car alarm went off at 3 am and i was woken up by it  .

i looked out of the window and i checked and fortunaetly  there was no one trying to break into the car.

the alarm would go off by itself evey 20minutes or so,so i drove the car into my driveway and left the car open with the alarm off as i needed to get some sleep.

in the morning, when i drove the car,a warning came up on the dash-hatch-/boot lid open-followed by a beep despite the the hatch being firmly shut.

when i drove to work and parked the car,the car alarm kept going off so i moved into a secure car park and left the car unlocked  with alarm disarmed as i wanted to save the battery from dying on me.

when i drove home from work, the hatchlid  warning message  did not come on .

now the car is parked in the driveway at home and locked and with alarm activated  and the alarm has not gone off so far-touch wood.

last night while driving, i noticed that the rear wash wipe washer did not spray normally-it was a weak jet  of water and in the morning i could smell washer fluid when i opended the hatch lid and the bottom was wet.

my analysis is as follows-has water leaked from a broken hose leading  up the the rear washer jet and contaminated the boot electrics module or hatch lid switch thus making the car think the hatch  is open when it is not and hence setting off the alarm last night??

and as the alarm has  not gone off so far ,has the bootlid microswitch dried up and hatch lock  module working again?

or has the wiring loom to the boot lid which serves the alarm circuit broken somewhere nhence giving the false warning that hatch lid was open when it wasn't.|?

vag.com has not come up with any relevant codes

remove boot lid trim, fix the leak in the washer hose, dry electrics and test the microswitch with a multimeter.

if it works job probably done.

Thanks we were all on the right lines to the cause of this problem. The hose had partially split at the rear wiper  motor inlet. The padding in the hatchlid was soaking wet and hence explains the slow drip of washer fluid onto the bootlid micro switch and the delayed effect of the alarm going off itself in the early hours. So my mechanic who I have known for many years cut off the split bit and secured the hose with cable ties, then he dried the foam pad and problem sorted. I paid him 25 quid .
