OSF wheel grinding / judder
« on: 04 March 2014, 09:00 »
Hi Peeps

Long time no speak - but I'm still here, 117k miles later

So, the other day I started to get a grinding noise and slight judder through the steering wheel from the osf wheel.

It's at its most pronounced above about 60mph, plus under moderately heavy breaking.

Any thoughts? I have booked in to the garage at home on Friday, my only concern is that I've got a lot of miles to cover before then and I don't like the idea of the wheel coming off on the M6!

Martin

PS - osf tyre was replaced weekend before last, I did wonder if the wheel hadn't been balanced properly but that wouldn't explain the noise would it??

Brake pads/sticky caliper?

MK4 did this when I first got it and seemed like the wheel bearing was about to collapse.

Where all my moneys went.

Golf MK3 1.6. Golf MK3 8v GTI.

Turns out one of the driveshafts had started to work loose.

They were very pleased I'd brought it in so soon (it was a terrible noise at times and I was worried the wheel was about to come off, so no surprises there.)

One pleasant surprise was that it was done under warranty, free of charge to me. Makes me wonder if they realise they'd done something wrong when looking at the wheel bearing about 6 months ago...

All

I think this noise has come back again; it's certainly very similar.

I did go some through very deep water with all the rain recently, so not sure if something has dislodged.

I'll check if I can see anything tomorrow; but I'm not going to be able to get in to a garage until next Saturday (14th) - will I be okay to drive it till then if it is the driveshaft again?

Bearing in mind I do quite a lot of motorway driving ...

Thanks

Martin

If the driveshaft is working loose, perhaps where the driveshaft mounts has been damaged or become defective.

No expert, but the fact that this garage did it for free under warranty (at the very end of 6 months part warranty), I'd be suspicious they've damaged something. Get a second opinion...

Also, I'd not drive it as driveshaft issues aren't something you want to make worse as they end in tears usually.

Moving over to Flickr, sorry for the broken picture links!

Turns out, this time, the front discs had warped.

I had been driving for some time and then went through some deep water so they probably cooled too quickly.

I've had a couple of notices saying they'd have to be replaced soon, so not surprised.

And they were the original discs, lasted 125k, so none too bad
