Here are some more statements for you

1. F reg cars should have had small bumpers, big bumpers came in around a G plate, although some early Gs got small bumpers too (late registered cars no doubt)

2. All late GTIs will have got big bumpers from the factory, if the hazard stalk is on top of the steering column its a late spec model which should have big bumpers.
3. Big bumpers were possibly available as an option to lower models but never heard anyone confirm it, GLs always got the big bumper kit but with a smaller bumper spoiler.
4. Think 256mm brakes came in around late 88 or 89, check yours before you go out and buy a kit

5. Big brass screws are not OEM bumper mounting equipment

6. You can tell if the front bumper is genuine or not by looking at the corners of the black textured bit, if it has a moulding line then its a genuine bumper. Also, non-genuine bumper skins are screwed to the mounting iron, genuine skins clip into place.
Edit: Looking in your gallery, you have the old small bumper rubbing strips and the red stickers, so yours was definitely a small bumper model from the factory
