Private Registration Plate - Advice Needed!
« on: 31 May 2014, 10:15 »
This is quite a long story so i will try and keep it short as possible. I need some advice fairly urgently on what to do. Here is what has happened:

Around 6 months prior to selling my previous car (mini) i purchased a private registration for it. I then bought the Golf on a spur of the moment decision leaving the mini with my private reg still on it as i didn't have time to go to the DVLA to have it removed.

I sold the mini to a good friend and we agreed to swap the registration back in to my name. My friend then had to sell the car urgently due to a change of job/circumstances. Still with my private reg on it.

The new owner of the mini and I came to an arrangement where as soon as the V5 arrived back to his registered address he would inform me and we would have the registration plate transferred back in to my name.

I have been pestering him for a while to get back to me about it. Finally this morning (May 31st) he gets back to me and informs me he has sold the mini, with my private registration plate still on it.

So now what do i do? I don't know what steps to take next and i'm at a bit of a loss with it.

Any advice anyone can give me would be much appreciated!

J

dont panic, all might not be lost,

the registration number always remains the property of the DVLA ( little known fact )  BUT you should still be known as the grantee - unless someone has falsified a signature on cherished transfer paperwork.

Its going to be a right ballache to sort out, espeically now there is no loacal DVLA offices, but I would write to DVLA, explaining it all, and stating you would like the plate to be put on retention.

Good luck, your going to need it, cos the latest owner could kick up a fuss and will have to pay his insurance admin fee if nowt else IF you manage to get the plate off his car

Don't mean to sound rude but it was your own fault for being lazy in the first place lol

As above though the plate should still be registered to you, so need to track down the new owner and write to the dvla. I would offer to pay the new owners administration fee seen as how they have done nothing wrong,  probably make them more compliant

I'm kinda in the opposite position, I bought a G60 in January with a private plate which was supposed to be retained however they pissed about saying they'd sent it and by the end of january it had run out of tax and i put it off the road to rebuild its engine so they would have to wait until I taxed it again, which was in April. Still waiting on them sorting it out and i'm going to ring dvla on monday and if they have yet to recieve the retention application I am going to send in a V62 and get the car and reg put in my name, which i'm legally entitled to do. As far as i'm aware that's all it takes for me to become the registered keeper of the car and the private plate and any future retention application by previous owner will be rejected. They were supposed to send it recorded and supply me with a tracking number so i knew exactly when the dvla got it but nothing recieved. You'd think they'd want it sorted out quickly since it a lot of money at stake but no.
