Golf mk 4 Gti 1.8 T New Owner
« on: 09 May 2014, 15:14 »
Hi all,

Very new to this forum and to owning a golf.... all ready loving it.
I've got the Mk4 1.8 Turbo Gti and it runs great especially after having done 91,000 and being my new daily.
Is there anything i need to check for? as its feeling a little down on power and i cant seem to feel or hear any kind of turbo whine or whistle?
Its not massively noticeable im just curious as to if this is how it should sound?

Thanks?
Rich

Hi Rich.

Welcome to the forum and Golf GTi ownership.

I have had mine for 2 weeks now (although I did have a Mk3 GTi last year and that was probably the most enjoyable car I have owned).

Stuff to look out for? Not much in the way of specific common problems it seems. Generally a lot of people post here about boost/vac problems but each one seems to have a separate cause (apart from the PCV pipe under the inlet manifold).

The best place to start is to get your codes scanned. That will tell you if the ECU is seeing a boost problem. When I had the Mk3 I bought a cheap code reader from ebay (about £12 at the time) that works a treat on the Mk4 too. It can read and reset engine, airbag and ABS codes.

For more advanced electronic trouble shooting, many people use vag-com which is run from a laptop.

FWIW mine felt like the boost was unreliable and started thinking about boost leaks etc. But it made 153 bhp on the rollers the other day so it was fine after all.

I'll have a look into the code readers as i have heard people talk about them before.
Thanks
