Damaged wiring loom???
« on: 06 May 2014, 23:27 »
Hey all.

A few weeks ago my windscreen washer jets (front and back, oddly) stopped spraying when pulling back on the washer stalk.

To begin with they were intermittent, sounding very sick and cutting in and out. This happened a couple of times before they just stopped working completely.

The wipers kick off but the motors to spray the water just dont seem to kick in (cant hear them even trying). Ive also verified with VCDS that the car recognises that Ive pulled back on the stalk, but in my mind the fact that the wipers start wiping means the car knows Im trying to wash the windows, so it doesnt seem to be anything simple like a faulty stalk or some wider systematic problem.

Ive also checked all of my fuses and they all still seem to be in tact.

I had the car in for servicing to get 4 new boots a couple of days after and asked them to take a look at the washer jets. They said they tested the motors with an external power source and they work fine, but are enquiring about whether the car has been involved in an accident that may have resulted in damage to the wiring loom, either as a result of the crash itself, or the repairs.

They want to pull the front end of the car apart to inspect the more inaccessible parts of the loom to see whether this is the case (which sounds expensive enough in its own right at dealer prices). I bought from a dealer, Inchcape Romford to be precise, and I dont recall any mention of any accidents when I was sold the car about a year ago.

Since I live in west London I get my car serviced at West London VW which is also part of the Inchcape group. They said that if accident damage or subsequent repairs are not to blame then it'll go forward as a warranty claim (original manufacturer warranty runs out in mid September.)

I suppose my questions are:

1. has anyone else experienced anything similar?
2. where are the washer motors located, since its quite packed under the bonnet...?
3. whats a likely cost if Im going to have to fork out for this from my own pocket??? :undecided:

Since buying the car Ive swapped the radio and put in bluetooth. I took these out today and put the original radio back in (hail my procrastination for not having sold it yet) and same deal, so I dont think its anything to do with the changes Ive made (and I would have expected a failure much earlier if it was anything to do with my changes.)

Cheers.

That's a crazy suggestion by the dealer!

I had a very similar issue with my MK5 GTI several years ago and it was just a case of lime scale and other gunk clogging up the pipes and the bottle itself. The dealer somehow cleaned it all out and it was fine again after that!
It's a very common issue surely.

Were you just getting no water out of the jets, or did your pump also cease working completely?

I can't remember for certain. But the same thing happens on frosty mornings. I'm pretty sure that they don't operate (no motor noise either) if there's a hard frost.
