Stages from built to delivered.
« on: 31 March 2014, 11:05 »
I ordered my GTD via leasing company at the beginning of October and was initially given an ETA of the 3rd March. This went back to 14th April at which point I started asking questions as to why this was. Leasing company started saying things like "VW build dates go backwards and forwards" and "we can only give an educated guess". I contacted them again today to ask if they could give me the supplying dealers contact details so I can ask them directly if the car has been ordered, what stage it is at etc but they're not able to give me this info, apparently.

They have just got back to me to say that "your car has been completed for build and is due to arrive at the dealer in 2-3 weeks". I gather, from this forum, that there are several 'stages' that the car goes through once built that retail customers can see via VW's tracker that give more info. Is this correct?

That's correct, you have the 5a stage (built and en-route to port for shipping), 5b stage (at port, waiting a ship), 5c stage (on a ship - this stage is often skipped in the tracker from what I've read) and stage 6 (at UK port, awaiting/being transported to the dealership/PDI location of the ordering company). Even if you have order tracking as a retail customer, the tracker can be out of date or update sporadically so you're not missing out on much!

That sounds like poor service from the lease company.  The stages (as shown on the tracker) are as follow:

1: processing order - as it sounds.

2: with the factory - parts are being ordered and are awaiting supply dates

3: BW confirmed - all parts are at factory and they've confirmed a date for build.

4: Build in progress - as it sounds, although very often skipped on the tracker as actual build is only a couple of days. States is takes 4 weeks from start of build to delivery.

5a: in transit:left the factory - on it's way to Emden.

5b: in transit:shipping - at Emden waiting a boat. Normally received 48 hours after 5a.

5c: in transit:nearly here - on boat to either Grimsby, Tyne or Sheerness depending on dealer location.  At this stage VW can give you the name of the boat, but it sometimes skips this stage.  Now states 10 days to dealer.

6. Arrived in the UK - as stated, takes up to 10 days apparently, although they try and do it within 7.

7. At dealer - just needs PDI and valet and is ready for you.

Tracker isn't too accurate, but VW customer services can give a better idea of what stage it is at.  If you speak to VW UK direct they may be able to find the dealer and car for you, but push the lease company for an order number.

Thanks. I'll get onto leasing company now armed with this info.
I guess I'm just cheesed off that I was told early March for delivery only for them to contact me in February to tell me that it had changed to mid April

That does seen bad form by them.  They should be able to give you a provisional build week and order number as soon as the process is ordered, which only takes a few days from order.  That would be projected on what options you want being in stock.  Once they know the items are in stock and parts are ready they can confirm a BW.

There will be changes depending on items in stock and wait for a build week, but they should at least keep you updated regularly.  Surely the first rule of customer service is to be completely honest with the customer and keep them in the loop!
