Strange problem
« on: 01 September 2005, 11:37 »
Hey guys wonder if you can help my mate.

He has a 1979 1600 gti (non carb) and has the following problem. She idles fine but when you put your foot down she stutters as if being starved of fuel.  Could it be the fuel pump or something related??

Also - does anyone have a fuel pump and accumulator for sale??

On the MK1 Cab it has two pumps for fuel..... a fuel pump and a high life pump !!!!!! on a in top its just the one, i had the same problem when I put my foot down it was like the was doing the opposite effect
I did change the injectors which arnt cheap but the problem was a blocked fuel pipe !!!!
before spending out on metering heads injectors or new pumps cheack the cheapest thing fiirst !!!!
Let me know how you get on

If it's fuel starvation it's most likely caused by the filler neck rusting out at the top which inturn clogs up the system and often knackering the injectors :undecided:
One thing to add... check the inlet side of the fuel pump as some have a small conical shaped filter that is just pushed into the inlet ,this gets clogged up quite easily.( if your careful you should be able to hook it out to clean it) .
If my memory is correct the 1600 mk1 GTIs only had one fuel pump  ...later 1800 injected cabrios and scirrocos had two  :undecided:

( Definitely check the filler neck for rust holes and replace it if necessary as these are the route cause of most mk1 running problems in my experience  be they injection or carb  )

Cheers for the responses guys. I've passed on the information to me mate. Will keep you all posted!!

Apparently the car is wanted back by VW - the chassis number is 0000000000000number!! He found it in a barn about 4-5 years ago with 32K on the clock!! Has been doing it up bit by bit but finding it very difficult as the parts are different from later MK1's...one example was the injectors; bought new ones to fin they don't fit!!

It's a 1979 on a T plate!!

It's a case of "How badly do VW want it ?"

HEHEHEHEHE WHAT A FIND!!!!

Tell him (and I can't stress this enuff) to hold out for loadsa money for it. I work in fleet management and have a very good relationship with VAG, I know that they found an old shortened chassis Audi Quattro Evolution ages ago (about 4 years ago), Audi paid £80K for it!!! albeit that this was one of the first ones, low mileage & an Evo etc - I know that these are different cars but the rarity is about the same!!!! I think that you'll find this will be a 'show peice' for a 'flagship' dealership as this is what ended up happening for that Audi.

At least a MK5 GTi with DSG etc etc, after all, how much does that cost VW???

Keep us posted
