I normally press the start button once to let the mirrors unfold while I put on my seat belt, then press the start button with my foot depressed on the clutch to fire the engine. Other times, I press the start button with my foot depressed on the clutch whilst the car starts. It takes slightly longer using the last method.

In cold conditions the engine starts to heat up long before you turn the ignition on. If I am informed correctly as soon as you open the door the glow plugs fire up.
If you start straight away you'll notice it won't crank straight away in very cold weather. So it never actually starts without pre-heating.
Tbh UK temperatures (except some -xx parts of Scotland) even without pre-warming you'd be unlikely to see it not start.

Jbgti it's as you say. So you the. Have to press the engine start button that kills the engine then press it again to fire it up then you can go. It's such a ball ache. Jimble what you say is always a concern but there isn't ever anyone around and the walk for

If it is like my current Diesel car with keyless, it is an automatic process.

I can get in my car on a cold morning, press the start button and it can be a few seconds before it fires up.  It is making sure that the plugs etc are ready before cranking the engine.  Can take a little getting used to at first.
That sounds similar to mine.  One press is enough to start the engine, though when the engine is cold there is a delay of a second or so.  All in all very happy with the keyless system so far.

For those of us with a key, it doesn't engage the starter until it's good and ready to anyway. You can have the key in P3 and it can pause for a moment before turning over to start.

Yup, turning the key now does not connect directly to a starter.  The ECU probably checks many variables before it applies power to a starter.  Same as turning headlights on,  slight delay before the Computer says, yep, all OK, now turn them on.

Nightmare to own and work on when well out of warranty though.  A continuity tester is not going to cut it anymore to diagnose faults :(

Ah...that would explain the delay with the keyless then.  Thanks
