Getting Prepared

I'm pretty new to all this but I'm about to pick up my new MK6 GTI this weekend so have ordered some kit in preparation of making a real effort to kep it looking as nice as possible.

So far I've ordered the following:

• x2 buckets + grit guards
• Megs Shampoo
• Interior Detailer
• Autoglym Fast Glass
• Polish + ultra fine steel wool for tailpipes
• Leather cleaner + conditioner

I'm about to order a couple of wash mitts and a drying blanket.  The only other thing I think I might be missing is a selant/wax (which I'm yet to look into properly), is there anything obvious missing from that list?  I've spent not far off £100 so far, so I don't really want to spend much more if it can be helped.  Is it necessary to use detailing clay with sealant/wax?

You've got all the basics covered there. 

Definitely get yourself a decent wax though, as the protection stage is very important and will make regular cleaning easier in the long run.  Don't forget to protect your wheels with a wax or a deidcated wheel sealant.  There are many decent waxes to choose from and you may wish to choose a colour specific one.   

If you're new to detailing, get accustomed to a good basic cleaning regime first before moving onto more specfic stuff like snow foaming, claying and polishing etc.  If you enjoy this kind of thing and have the time (and funds) I doubt it will be long before you start progressing onto the more intricate aspects of detaiing.

I would clay it and perhaps getting something like Autosmart Tardis for tas spots.  As for waxes and on a budget try Angel Wax.

This is all very new to me. I tend to have quite an addictive personality.  I fear the worst!

I'd echo what Booth said and definitely look at something to protect those wheels with (particularly if the car has the 18" Monzas which are diamond cut and susceptible to whiteworm corrosion if not looked after). Take a look at Poorboy's wheel sealant which has very good reviews or Finishkare High Temp Paste Wax/Fk1000p which is what I personally use (Comes in a massive tub of the stuff which will last forever with the durability of the stuff).

Looks like you've made a good start other than that. Take the time to clean it, decontaminate with your clay and protect it well with the waxes and those weekly or fortnightly maintenance washes will be so much easier . Above all though, enjoy your new car
