GOLF MK4 2.0 GTI...

hi guys just getting my first MK4 a couple of weeks ago and looking on the net ive read i should be getting roughly 35mpg (ish) but my dials tell me im on 13mpg and doesn't change at all ive tried sunday driving and even tried flooring it to see if it will drop further but doesn't.. and obviously the fuel im putting in is getting me nowhere! for e.g if the light has just come on i'll go to station and top up £10 and about 8-15 mile later the light is back on surely this can not be right. i do get a strong smell of petrol when turning the car over ?? im not a mechanical person so i dont know the first thing what it could be or what to look at but any help at all would be much appreciated thanks in advance guys

could be a number of things best to get it scanned for fault codes to see if anything pops up

get it scanned first to get a good idea as for 13mpg when you floor it it should go a lot lower for example I can get my car to 45mpg sunday driving and when I floor it I can get it below 5mpg

Sounds like your running rich, seriously rich Get it scanned and check all you pipes, make sure nothing has split.
