biXenons - what bulb??
« on: 03 January 2014, 13:49 »
I am trying to place an order with osram to get replacements for my bixenons.  Osrams provides the following options for high and low beams: xenarc original / xenarc cool blue intense / xenarc silverstar.  Has anyone changed their xenons by themselves / anyone knows what bulbs exactly are on from factory?

thanks
Wife's: mk8 TSI 1.4 RL, 5dr atlantic blue, DSG, Norfolk 17", pan s/r, leds
Now: mk7.5 TSI 1.4 RL, 5dr tornado red, DSG, Singapore 17", pan s/r, leds
Before: mk6 GTI 5dr candy white, DSG, Monza Shadow 18", s/r, bi-Xenons, DCC
Even before that: mk5 GT 5dr tornado red, manual, s/r

The bulbs are D1S and I would highly recommend the Osram CBI (cool blue intense).

They make the original Xenons look a bit yellow.
It does take quite a few hours to get them burnt in but the result is a very crisp white light.
I think they are standard fit on new Mercs.

Just make sure you get them from an official Osram dealer as there are a lot of cheap Chinese copies on eBay.
Mk6 GTI 3dr | DSG | Tornado Red | 18" Monza 2 | LED Xenons | RNS510 | Bluetooth | Smoked LED tails | Cruise | Reversing Camera | TPMS | - now sold :(

mike do you know if these are what are actually used in the biXenons fitted on gtis mk6? or is this another kind of xenon you are talking about?

D1S is the bulb type, just like H1, H7 etc in halogens. Mike is recomending the Osram bulbs just as many people recomend Osram Nightbreakers for halogen replacements.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

so this D1S bulb fits BEHIND the curved lens that one can see when looking at the car from the outside???  I thought the outer lens would need replacing as well, am i wrong? (hopefully yes).  When i looked the model year up, it shows D2S rather than D1S (car is a 2009 make).

so i gather the factory bulbs are around the 4000k mark, can anyone verify that?  is there any bulb that would get me more light (both in illumination as well as in distance covered)?

Also would the xenons be needing leveling after replacing the bulbs?
