Diagnostic socket
« on: 14 October 2003, 15:50 »
Currently experiencing intermittent problems with my 16v. Having difficulty starting and then a spluttering / misfiring action will start where it tends to cut out. Once restarted and warmed up the car runs fine.

Before replacing sensors and ECU etc, I purchased a Draper fault code reader for a VW to ascertain if any sensor faults can be detected.

The diagnostic socket above the ash tray is a 16 pin socket and the Draper fault reader has three flat prong connections, red / yellow and blue, that has to be connected to the socket.

Does anyone know where the fault reader coloured connections are to be placed in the 16 pin diagnostic socket or if an adapter is required. I know there is connection points in the 16 pin socket at terminal 4 / 7 / 15 / 16.

Cheers.

Didn't you get any instructions with it?

Got instructions with the fault reader, but the diagnostic connection refers to an audi (the fault reader does VW and Audi). The Audi has a two prong black and two prong white connection as far as I'm led to believe. The instructions show where to place the coloured wires from the fault reader.

Cheers

If you're passing by J3 of M42, I'll happily plug your 16v into my VAG-COM diagnostics free of charge.

This is as good as the VAG tools and better in some cases.

Cheers

PS Sounds like coolant temp sensor should be your first replacement.

Think your Golf has "OBD" diag socket, the reader you have is for the early type and wont work.

Ahh yes that's the old style connector as fitted to Mk2 8v, Audi 80 and early Mk3 Golf's, somewhere around later L reg the connector changed to the D shape multipin that you've got there.

I can read both types with VAG-COM but it did cost ?300 for a software licence and a cable!

cheers

Thanks MK1 and WolksWizard for the info with the socket, the car is a 95 16v

Sounds as if the VAG-COM software is highly recommended to fault find with Mk 3 golf problems and worth the extra money - shall have a look on the internet for a supplier and further info.

Cheers for the help.

VAG COM is great and it's even better with MkIV.
We had a 4motion V6 in and it'd tell you which cylinder was misfiring!
Also with mkiv you can talk to the convenience locking system and set it up to beep, flash etc.  What I always do is switch off the selective unlocking feature on any Mkiv I use often as it really bugs me to have ti press the button twice, usually after I've gone to the boot with the keys in the ignition!

Cister Automotive in Oxfordshire are the place I got mine from.
