golf gt tdi 170 engine light
« on: 15 December 2013, 17:52 »
Hi there my 1st post and looking for a bit of help ok here goes

I brought the car last week as salvage needing a new door and repair to quarter really clean car and iam in the body shop business so would save some money that way.

on the way home engine light cam on so when i got home put it on the fault code reader an the only code that come up 01221 which is crash side sensor so cleared the fault and engine light went out all good so went for a drive and after about and hour the dpf light came on and the tick over was at 1000 rpm, the car felt slow wouldn't say limp mode but turbo boosting up late and a little bit of blueish smoke and smells like unburnt fuel in the cab plus when the car pulls it feels like its miss firing a little.

So the dpf light went out eventually and was all good for about an hour bing engine light back on but driving fine, but some times now the tick overs sits a 1000 rpm and blueish smoke again and takes time to boost plus slight miss fire under acceleration, but if i turn it of and start it back up alls well drives fine no smoke and flys but some times it ok for a few hours and some times it gose back to running bad straight away, been to vw to check the service history and its got full service history and had the injectors done on the recall.

sorry for such a long write up  :embarrassed: any help would be great as iam getting worried now as its my only mode of transport thanks darcy

Could be an issue with the throttle body (or manifold inlet flap motor if you want to be nerdy) they're pretty flaky on the 170s. Oil leaks past the shaft seals and gets in to the electronics. Needs some more detailed investigation really though.

the manifold runners on the 170 are controlled by a little vac pot down the left hand side of the manifold. the diaphragm is very prone to splitting (use a vac tester or suck on it to see if it moves the rod that turns the runners). They can drive like sh*t when this fails because it not only loses the runner control it takes vacuum away from the actuator. The part is only about 15 quid from TPS.. the book says remove the inlet manifold to replace but you can leave the metal bracket attached, twist it out and replace with the new one. Fiddly as hell but 15 minutes fiddling is better than stripping down the manifold.

thanks very much for your help i just sucked the little pipe and its moving it fine and dose not seem to loss pressure at all and snaps back fast, about to start taking the manifold of and it looks like someone has been fiddling with this before as the shiny metal pipe that goes to the egr is lose and wont tighten up due to someone over tightening and its leaking air, but i have sorted this now buy putting a new bolt in there

plus the flapper solenoid top has snapped of and the other solenoid near the turbo has had the wires spliced as if someone's doing a test on it plus i cant see the diaphragm moving under revs how should this work, runs fine just no boost now plus the dpf lights on  think ive brought a wrong en
