Help/Advice Desperately Needed.
« on: 03 December 2013, 08:25 »
Hiya guys, any advice would be very much appreciated.

Just had a call from wife in tears, she managed to get to work but just. I'm at work at the moment. Anyway, Gti 1.8T and she says the gearstick has gone completely loose and floppy and she has no gears. Is this a common fault and an easy fix? Sounds to me like a link or pin away but without seeing it I don't know. Is it something I could nip along and do a fix on to get her home. Luckily I've got all my tools and trolley jack in the boot of my car here with me. Any advice greatly appreciated folks. Really don't fancy trying to tow her!

Morning Mate firstly glad to hear your wife is safe.
My first thought on this would be the gear linkage.
its easy to see when you lift the bonnet on the left of the battery look down you would see a what looks like a golf club I beleive there is a pin of some kind connected to it that can snap to test if your gear box is Ok move the golf club and you should feel it move into gear but I'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon :)

Cheers for the reply mate. She got a garage out through the bank account breakdown cover that we forgof we had,  doh! Anyway, upshot is the guy has had a look and said it's an easy fix that a plastic connector has broken and that I'll be able to do it easily and quickly. He's dropped the car at our local garage where I know the owner well so I'll collect the car tonight. Just got to get the wife home later now!
Ps - anyone know what part he'll be refering to so I could order and collect on my way home?
