starter for mk3 golf
« on: 30 November 2013, 15:14 »
hi i've asked in the mk3 section but maybe someone here will have more info..

I have a mk3 golf engine AAM automatic..the starter has been taking a few turns to start the car.
initially it sounds like it is spinning?(not sure) and then it does start after three turns max...sometimes it will start on the first go...sometimes on the second...

Earlier it was taking two turns almost all the time but would start on the second turn. It seems to be worse in the winter as last winter it was doing this but during the summer it did not.

I have cleaned all of the connections going to the starter/alternator/batteries.

I was wondering if starters from other vw's are compatible as I have read an article on vortex that states on the whole that they are (manual/automatic) but I would imagine that they would have to be different?

I don't know where the part number is on the starter, but I have the part number for the solenoid? which is

2 339 303 222 722

I think the starter is 020911023M not sure of the first four numbers as they are difficult to read..no letter after the M exists and this part number is not found on vagcat.com:(

Looking on the German pages it seems that this is a common starter for a lot of VW models...f that is the number for the starter...

So isthere a difference between a starter for an automatic and a manual on the 1.8?

I am not sure how to diagnose if it is the solenoid or the starter so I would would like to have some advice on that.

Any help would be appreciated as I am sure that sometime in the future I will be towing this home...:(
