Golf Gti won't start/turn over
« on: 10 October 2013, 10:48 »
Hi everyone,

I don't know if anyone can help but my car won't start! It's a Golf MK4 GTi 1.8T.

It's been running a bit iffy for a couple of weeks, until it warms up it doesn't run smooth and idles high but I found that if you start the car, turn it off then start it again the idles drop and it doesn't run as bad. I did some research and found that this could be a coil so I was going to get it looked at when it went in for a suspension change next week - should have been this week but the suspension kit delivery was delayed!!

Then this morning I done the usual of starting the car, turning it off then tried to restart the car but it wouldn't turn over. All the electrics come on and all the lights on the dash but the engine will not even attempt to start. So I had to leave it at home and nick my husbands little runaround to come to work in.

He has checked the voltage on the battery but that is fine and the battery is only about a month old anyway so I wouldn't expect it to be that.

When I get home I am going to check the coil packs and leads etc but does anyone have any idea of what may have caused this or what the problem could be?

No, nothing happens. I turn the key and it doesn't attempt to turn over or crank.

Check starter motor. See if it's getting a voltage.

Check the -ve make sure it hasent came off. I'd says its a starter motor problem.

When it worked did the starter motor squeek? If so is imagine the starter motos sh!t it's self. Easy enough to replace.

Ok I will check those.

I haven't noticed any noises so wasn't expecting anything to go wrong. But that's always when something goes wrong

We have checked the lead to the starter motor and that is getting 12 volts. Also tried putting a red jump lead on the +ve battery terminal and the starter motor but got it didn't start so it looks like it's the starter motor.

Guess I should start looking for one...

Thank you for your help :-)
