Hi I ordered my car through DTD, was also a bit nervous - but a piece of cake. Would do it again no problem. Placed order with DTD then received call from a VW main dealer in Kent, went through order (5 door, pure white, manual, Adaptive chassis control) and that was it. Ordered in May received September.

Not bothered about PP, but had to have ACC as had it in my MK6 GTI and liked it a lot.

The car is awesome and I cant fault it. The parking brake is so easy and all-round a brilliant motor. With the ACC in comfort mode it drives like a car costing twice as much, it's expensive but you can see and feel where the money has gone - it fact it's so good I consider it a bargain.

My bother in law has the new BMW 3 series and I would say the VW is a better car.
Mk7 GTI, Pure White, 5 Door, Manual, ACC - Collected and enjoying it.

True it definitely pays to shop around. I think the key is not to form an emotional attachment to any one vendor, although the emotional attachment to the car already gives you a weaker hand in negotiations.

DTD is appealing but being allocated a dealer far away is a gamble. I've never bought a car through a broker before but your experiences above are somewhat reassuring. I wonder if the after sales service will be ambivalent/indifferent since I didn't bother coming in and meeting them to build a relationship. Is it the case that the dealers who can offer 12% are really in trouble and they may not be keen to offer much service after the sell.

It comes down to what price to put on face-to-face business, geographical proximity, ongoing relationship and service. IF things go smoothly then I don't need much dealer interaction but in the case that anything goes wrong or delayed, I would want to know that within a short driving distance I can turn up and apply some pressure. On the other hand DTD may manage to broker the deal with the dealers in my area (who have been lying to me about their best price!) and I'll be quids in. Is there any way to find out which dealer your car will be brokered from before handing over cash via DTD?

  • Yes! Wait a minute... No!
Some distance to the dealer may not be a huge disadvantage.  It gives you the opportunity to make a trip of it on collection day anyway.  Its probably only an issue if problems occur like having to reject the car, or return it after a few days.  Hopefully the above would be relatively rare.

You can ask them what their procedure is in the event of after sales trouble.  Do it by email and press for their procedure in the event of minor problems (say if you need something checked but can't afford time and effort to do a 200 mile round trip for it) so you get it on record what they would do while they are still in the "suck up to you to make a sale" period.  Basically you want them to say they'd collect the car at their expense for big issues, or they'd arrange a local dealer to support you on small issues or questions.

[EDIT: If you don't feel like they are being helpful then just don't use them.  My VW dealer was pretty crap to be honest.  They didn't communicate and when I contacted them they were fairly dismissive and I got the impression they thought I was a nusience.  Questions I asked were misunderstood and answers that were given were blunt with little effort to "sell" something.  A take it or piss off attitude.  When I did eventually cancel they didn't want to hear why or have me fill in a satisfaction survey.  If I did it again I'd not go with anyone showing the above warning signs.]

As I understand it once you are beyond the initial few days/weeks it can be looked after through the usual VW network, so you can go to your local dealer.  As far as building a relationship goes my experience (limited as it is) has been that dealers are large operations now and the sales department are typically somewhat removed from the service side.  So even if you have a relationship with the sales person at best they will have only limited influence over the service side anyway.

Think the answer to worth wait will be a resounding yes as you will be purchasing a great car but that really applies to when purchasing any marquee car. When get into it for the first time all the time waiting just disappears in an instant.

Always wanted a Quattro as a kid and my excitement on finally getting one was off the scale and have loved it but scratch itched and it is onto the Golf now.

Think your comment with regards always wanting one since a little boy is the read decider as what is another 5 months when waited that long and satisfaction and smile on face is guaranteed.

Options is most personal and subjective thing on this forum so only way to do that is go see and play with them as you have an advantage over many here who bought blind as there are quite a few demos now.

My options are below in my footer and feel with all the standard options that is a pretty decent package.

Mine is lease but from all seen said on DD I would definitely as a private got best price from dealer direct and DD and if DD werre better used them without hesitation.

Wish you well

The only aftersales issue you have with buying via broker are any issues not properly picked up with PDI that may become apparent later (suspension transport pucks not removed, for example). For something like that, the remedial cost is with the supplying dealer and not with VW. For anything else, the warranty will pick it up and you can go to any dealer for that.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

I have taken the plunge. I got 10% off the car, and a very good price for my part exchange so both dealer and I were happy to sign on the line - thanks to all for their advice.

Have officially joined the waiting club. Wonder how I will spend the next 5-6 months...will start by designing the tagline to appear below my posts!
