Lowly GT Owner With Colour (or lack of) MFD Trouble
« on: 13 September 2013, 22:17 »
Hi,

I have been lurking here for quite a while whilst I've waited over 5 months for my GT (not I sadly) to arrive and have learned lots of useful bits and pieces.

My question for all you good forum members:

I ordered the Colour MFD for my GT and it was on all the paperwork but due to a dealer admitted error partly caused by duff info from VW (they were told the Colour MFD was going to be standard on MY 2014 on the GT) I do not have it. This now means I don't get all the goodies displayed in the MFD with my Discover Pro like the speed limits.

I have my £135.00 back for now but I have asked them to see if it can be retrofitted. Does anyone know if this is possible? Having had a look around the WWW it looks as if the whole instrument cluster would have to be replaced.

I'm looking for some feedback so I can push them along a bit like some part numbers maybe, the engine is a 1.4 ACT.

Any help or suggestions much appreciated.

Thank you.

It would certainly be a new instrument cluster.

Did you also order Lane assist, as without this £500 option, you won't get speed camera display in the dash anyway ?

I don't have lane assist but was under the impression that the Colour MFD replicated the speed limit indicator from the top left hand corner of the Discover Pro.

Haven't fully read all the manuals yet!

I have the nav pro and no it doesn't appear to show the speed limit

it's a simple and easy job to replace clocks for colour ones. only problem is it will cost way more than £145. clocks are only held in with two screws so is a five minute job but both keys need to be coded to the new clocks and that's dealer only. I'd be asking them to retro fit them foc for the balls up.

If they can retro fit get them to do it.  They should be covering the cost or VWUK should.  You can make the point that it isn't just £135 as you choose other options like the pro nav because they integrate with the MFD.  So if they can't retrofit they can refund the cost of the pro nav too?

colour MFD is independent of the nav pro and the nav pro will work exactly the same with or without a colour MFD.

Thanks for all the replies so far,

Does not sound as if it is a major job to get it changed, I'm sure on occasion instrument clusters go faulty post delivery and have to be replaced so it can't be that difficult. Should only be in the shop for a day, I presume all the connectors are the same in the back of the cluster, will just maybe need reprogramming somewhere to let it know it's now colour, plus the keys thing mentioned above.

The dealer was being a bit evasive saying it could not be done but I now think that's them seeing any profit they made being eroded. I can't imagine the correct cluster would be cheap but at the end of the day its their error and they need to sort it out between themselves and VW. I'm also prepared to give them the £135.00 back.

I have taken the car away as I had already swapped insurance, its registered with a private plate and the trade in was on its last legs so I was put in a bit of a difficult position if I rejected it there an then; me and the wife may have been walking home.

On the positive side the car looks and drives fantastic (10 miles so far :smug:), it's such a shame that this one problem has taken the shine off it.

I've been doing some WWW digging to try and find an exploded diagram of the dash but have only found a MK6 LHD one so far and that looks a fairly straightforward swap out.

Any other help, suggestions or part number(s) much appreciated.

an hour and a half tops is all it takes. old cluster out, new one in and finally recode both your keys. nothing more nothing less, it's easy so don't take no for an answer and don't take any bulls4it from them.
