had the golf for nearly a year now, brakes are not as sharp as they used to be. what are the first things you check replace or even do to gain better performance?

Well pads and discs are easy to check if they are worn. When did you last have your brake fluid checked or changed.

You can buy better pads, bigger discs are upgrade to S3/ED30 brake kit or you have the money buy a BBK kit from a tuner.
