eBook Reader
« on: 26 July 2013, 06:47 »
I'm tossing around the idea of buying some sort of eBook reader. I do a lot of reading, got tonnes of books at home, however the idea of carrying one device with an entire library is appealing to me.

What are people's suggestions? Budget would certainly be below £100. Not too fussed about extra features, although I do prefer the paper white screens. Kindle would be an obvious choice I guess.

Kindle fire or HD is defo the best unit for reading I'm sure you can change the black and white on the unit plus I've used google market to stick apps on it and all works so its versatile long term my father in law has international radio and whatsapp making it more usable than just a reader!

^ Kindle Fire isn't below the £100 budget.

The standard Kindle is good and only £69 (ie about the same as 10 new books). It does lack a back light, but that a) means the battery lasts longer b) it doesn't strain your eyes as much.
The Kindle does fit nicely in the hand too, with next/prev page buttons in a useful place.

Buying a device that is dedicated to that one thing usually means that it'll be better at it than one that does lots of things.
EG using a Playstation/Xbox to play CDs will never sound as good as a dedicated CD player (proper hi fi) costing the same or less.

Sure the Kindle Fire (and iPad and Android tablets) will give you an e-reader app, but you'll get a shiny screen giving glare, you'll get less battery life, the backlit screen will strain your eyes and it'll be heavier. Oh and if you use it in public, a tablet is more likely to be stolen.

this, the kindle (touch / paperwhite) offer the best reading experience due to the e-ink screens, opposed from a backlit tft or lcd screen that you'll find on tablets.  the long and short is is much easier on the eyes you can read in all conditions and you don't have the battery drain for the backlit technology.  The downside is the way e-ink renders means they are rubbish for books / documents you'll be panning and zooming around (generally technical documents of those with images you'll want to zoom into).

I personally have an android tab and a kindle touch, I use the android for reading pdf documents and the kindle for reading ebooks.
