well took the coolant pipes to and from the heater matrix and water is flowing good again. little leak from the strange array of pipes i have made to loop them, but its ok for now!
gonna take it to work this weekend and see if i can "gently" unblock the heater matrix by means of air, pressure washer or garden hose as i really dont want to take out the dash and replace heater matrix before winter!
