As stated in another thread... do any of the German brands have reliability that their reputations (used to) suggest?

Or are all these cars built for the 3 year lease market...

I wasnt sure what version of dsg box and what desisel engines they were on about.
Theres also vw other poorly designed poor engineered parts that fail. Be it chain tensioner,  DSG mecatronics control unit, turbo, pcv valve, air con unit, water pump, clutch, wheel barrings, or rust issues, etc and there just the ones I remember this minute lol.
From my experience vw dont care about customers and more fool anyone who falls for vws BS quality lines nowadays as there poorly built, poorly designed, cars with touchy feely plastics to keep people who dont know any better happy. But thats just my own personal view.

Having had a mk7 for a 2 hour drive the other day (hire car) I dont believe the quality is better than the mk6 I believe its worse.

I read your thoughts on the mk7 but tbf it wasn't a GTI/D you were talking about it was a lower trim model, when i've driven bluemotion or other trim level mk6's i've felt a bit underwhelmed by them, i love getting back in my GTI! It stands a chance that spending a bit more than 10 mins in a mk7 GTI/D would make you feel a bit different?

I've said this before but I'm absolutely under no illusions that my car will be more reliable than anything else because it's a VW or because it's German. Anybody who still thinks that German = quality is a fool. This is the reason I am choosing to have a new chain tensioner, water pump and so on installed in my June 09 model before it goes bang.
However, there are enough fools in this brand snob obsessed country who do still think German = quality and this is the reason someone will always give me plenty of cash on resale for my car. If it had been a Renault Megane for example it would be worth thousands less. Ad that's the sole reason I buy VW.
Having said that, I think I feel the need to change brand next time on moral grounds more than anything else as I'm getting rather sick and tired of hearing about numerous VW faults that they refuse to do anything about. They might like to look at how Toyota go about fessing up to problems and dealing with recalls - that's how to do it properly. At least then you get customers' respect.

The What Car annual survey has proven the Jap stuff to be top of the tree again for reliability, German marques are a fair way down with VW in 31st place.......
