It's one thing testing cars based on list price and among out the golf is the same "price" as the 135 and the AMG merc when specced to the gunnels.. Then saying one is better because it hits 100mph a few secs faster, but most of us live in the real world...
but it's about time mags started to show lifetime running costs - purchase price, depreciation, finance costs, road tax for 3 years, insurance etc.
I bet you then the golf would be more in line with smaller cheaper cars because it holds its value.
The 135 I looked at on the BMW calculator, £27k, 2k miles, the monthly finance charge with same deposit was 450 a month and 11pc APR v 298 a month and 6pc APR for the golf. Throw in lower insurance, much lower road tax and better retained value...
