Hopefully someone can help or point me in the right direction...

I have a 2008 golf GTI and when I got into the car this morning there was a horrific buzzing noise coming from the back of the car. I narrowed it down to the speakers, mainly the back passenger side I think. This noise was happening before I started the engine & I locked the door whilst in there to see if it continued and it did, which seems to suggest it is happening independently of power (could be completely wrong there as my technological knowledge is lacking).

So I drove to work with a sound blaring out which can only be described as a very angry wasp being stuck in the stereo system with a megaphone. Again, when I parked, I locked the doors to see if it continued & it did, still raging away now I imagine.

There is only one half-explanation I can think of... My car has a headphone input jack, so I can plug my iPhone into the car. However, it doesn't connect to the main console (meaning I can't change songs through the car). I bought a little device which plugs into the cigarette lighter, through the iPhone and into the car headphone jack. I've noticed that when I turn the engine off with this device, it makes a strange electrical sound which isn't good. So I started pressing pause before turning the engine off and it didn't seem to make the noise again.

Any help very much appreciated!

I forgot to say - I tried the radio & my iPhone and the sound was significantly diminished - very quiet & completely drowned out by the buzzing noise.

What happens if you remove the device plugged into your cigarette lighter?

The sound continues. In the end I had the device completely unplugged, stereo turned off (even engine turned off and car locked) and the noise continues.
