Mk2 8v engine misbehaving
« on: 13 August 2005, 02:06 »
OK, so I recently did a little work on my car, new plugs leads etc, oil change and fitted a mk1 oil cooler. Since getting it all back together the car started off running fairly well, with a bit of belt squeal but nothing too major, when driven the temp gauge is all over the place, it started off sitting at 3/4s, then dropped off to nothing, then just kept varying all over the place, never settling.

I then drove about 40 mins and after around 20 the temp gauge was just sitting right off the bottom of the scale.

After about 35 mins something really weird started happening, every now and then there was this knocking, felt like something was knocking against the floor under my feet. This kept coming and going until I stopped. Not sure how overall performance is as I was taking it quite easy. Also there is quite a lot of tapping coming from the engine, a bit like tappet noise, though I'm not sure.

The only other thing I've noticed is is when I turned off the engine after running it up for the first couple of times after putting it all back together, there was an odd gurgling noise coming from the engine, not sure if thats normal or not?

Any tips or advice would be great, really need my car to be working and would be nice to know its not just about to explode!!

did you refill with oil after fitting the oilcooler

does that 'guur' noise happen after you start it? Mine does that and so does my mates

check the connector plug on the clocks. the temp guage does that if the connector is loose. could have nudged a wire when fitting the oil cooler?
