Dynamic Bend Lighting Error
« on: 20 January 2016, 10:59 »
Hi,

I hope someone can help. Last night I had a message (Error - bend lighting AFS) pop up on the MFD (GTI, 2013 model) and after doing a bit of research it seems that the first thing to do is check that a bulb has not blown.

I was just wondering if there is any way of knowing which bulb (left or right) is blown. And are they easy to remove/replace?

Thanks

Not to be taken the wrong way but have you switched your lights on and checked if any are out?

Not taken the wrong way at all

I haven't done that, because I thought they only came on at 'speeds over approx 20 mph' according to the handbook, so unless the car is in motion you can't tell. Or am I missing something??

I "think" they do come on when stationary as the wheel is turned in either direction with the engine running.

Have a search on here as I'm sure its been mentioned plenty of times.
From memory I think it might be the wee lights that point to the side and come on under 10mph? when either you indicate or turn the wheel. So it should be easy to spot it.

Bit of confusion here.

Dynamic Bend Lighting moves the actual lens by up to 15 degrees, using small servo motors, functioning at 6mph+, following steering movement around the bend.

Static cornering lights are different altogether.
If the Xenon bulb itself had gone you would see that.

Could be the Servo motor perhaps.

If you're talking about the static cornering lights then you should easily see if they are working when in the dark with your lights on and you turn your wheels to either left or right and if you can't then you will know which is not working. They are H7 bulbs and should be very easy to fit.

If it is your active bending lights then put your lights on and get out and look.

However by the warning you got it is more lightly to be a problem with the active bending part and not the bulb. Get it booked into a garage while it is still under warranty.

I've had it three times.... first time the dealer took the whole thing apart looking for a complex fault only to find it was a cornering bulb, second and third time they changed a cornering bulb in about 5 mins while i waited.

Seems this bit of the car is one of the few that don't give precise error messages...

While it could be something else, its most likely the bulb - they seem to last me about 20k.

Great, thanks for all the replies. I'll try the cornering bulbs first. I've done just over 20K so it seems to be in line with what fredgroves says.
