Bizzare temperature/ heating issues

Right so I've just had an engine replacement carried out due to lack of compression in my old engine.

I'm getting really weird temperature readings.

If I go out for a long enought drive for the car to be at its optimum temperature the needle sometimes only just sits on the scale (higher than where it sits when the ignitions off). How ever if I turn the car off for 5 or so minutes the needle then creeps upto 90 where it should be sitting (however this isn't always the case)

The top and bottom radiator hoses are the same temperature and are fairly hot to touch!?

If I put my econ onto auto at 29* it blows cold air infact  what ever temperature you set it at and what ever mode it blows cold air.

The fans are also very random as to when they kick in if atall

What is this pointing towards?

Could be an air lock or thermostat issue

Thanks for the replies guys , I have run the car on idle and reving at 2.5k revs with the expansion tank cap off, would this not of got rid of air locks?

Also with the rad hoses both hot to touch would this not indicate the thermostat open and it circulating?

Could it be temp sender?

well being the temp sender is less than a £10 id replace that first, clear any codes and take it from there, if it still does it the therm could be getting stuck open which then id look to change the therm.

If you are fitting cold air through when you put your climate control up that shows you have an air lock. These cars self bleed, my advice would be rev it up to 4-5 k and hold it there for half a minute or so and also rev is up and down as in hold the accelerator down for a few seconds to get the pump spinning slow and fast, slow and fast, if you get what I am saying. Had the same problem on a r32 and got rid of the air lock this way.
