Interior heater/fan
« on: 28 July 2005, 13:19 »
Mine is working intermittently at best at the moment, not a big deal in the summer but i'd like to fix it before winter. Is it a replacement needed or are their issues that can be rectified on the existing motor?

if its the fan thats not working apparently it is quite common - mine squeals a bit on lowest speed, but quietens after a bit.

the fans is behind the shelf under the glovebox, you could try some grease on the bearings???

It is likely to be your heater rheostat the bit the 0 1 2 3 plugs into, goes quite commonly on VW for some reason? available from all good breakers and VAG maybe GSF?

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

if it cuts on/off all the time then its probably the bushes in the motor. you can take out the motor out of its housing and give the bush contacts a good clean. mine is much smoother and quieter now

Grease/moisture was probably the cause of this problem

Sorry to drag up this thread again
I've read the instructions on volkswagen.msk about how to remove the fan motor but it states I need to remove the glove box and "the lower right instrument panel tray". I've already removed the glove box as i've started work on my stereo installation and I can't see anything else there that may need to be removed. I haven't located the fan motor yet because I didn't know what it looked like until I saw the pic on vw.msk so when sitting in the front passenger seat where do I need to look, is it to the left, right, centre etc ?

Thanks guys
James

The motor is right up against the left if your sat in the passenger seat Its the biggest bit that hangs down. I only had to remove the under tray when i repaired mine. There fiddily to get out but not really a big job. You might wanna remove the chair for better access. May as well as the chair is only held in with one nut.

Right, I had the fan motor out tonight and couldn't see anything wrong but discovered the problem.
If I turn the motor upside down it works fine all the time, if I then point it upwards it turns off. I've fiddled with the cables to it but it makes no difference so I assume it's a loose connection inside.
As it is a sealed unit I assume it's a new motor?  A real pain when you see it working but the wrong way round.
