1983 GLI Cabrio
« on: 30 August 2005, 22:46 »
About a month ago I bought an ex show car - Lagos Yellow Cabrio that was formerly owned by the secretary of VW Owners Club GB.

The car is still immaculate having covered only 65k. There is one problem, however. The bumpers have been painted with black paint. I'm told that this was done in the factory. The paint is very brittle and flaking and underneath, the plastic is light grey.

I want to keep the car original, but with a black hood and almost black wheel arch trims, I think it will look pretty stupid with light grey bumpers.

Does anyone know what the factory finish should be and does anyone know the car  Reg No. PJI 4653? It was in the Birmingham area for many years.

Grey bumpers were the order of the day back then.... with the chrome inserts. I have an '84 cabby which is based on the GLI and that had grey ones 'til I binned them in favour of black. You can't buy grey any more.

Thanks for the reply Dano. Are the black one's easy to obtain and how much?

I have fannied them up with spray on bumper paint for the time being but would problably rather replace them.

Yeah, I know the car. Some guy in Jockland bought it for his wife. Keeps it under a tarp, I think itwould be more reliable if he used it more!!
