Here's a thought... why don't VW be the first and just make the 4 pot derv sound nice* without tricks and gimmicks

Hawaii: Its probably the most refined one out there - noticeably quieter and more uniform at tickover than the BMW 2.0 unit. I think they would have to rewrite the book on diesel engines to get it to actually sound like a 2.0TSI. There are loads of engineering tweaks that VW have done over the years to minimise diesel clatter. They name a lot of them in their technical explanations for TDI technology (I can't think of any off the top of my head).
