Cold start issues on 2.0 ADY (Golf mk3)
« on: 03 May 2013, 14:23 »
Hi,

I'm having some issues with my ADY engine.
The engine is NOT in a Golf anymore, it's been refitted to a VW Vanagon from '86.

When starting the engine from cold (ie. in the mornings) it starts, runs for a minute and then one of the cylinders cuts out.
Sometimes it even stalls and when it does so it's REALLY difficult to bring back to life.

It smells VERY much of unburnt gasoline.

I've so far changed following parts:

Dizzy cap
Rotor
Spark plugs
Spark plug leads
Ignition coil
Coolant temperature sensor

I've tried switching MAF without any success too.

The following is what I get from a VCDS readout:
Code: [Select]
Sunday, 07 April 2013, 10:00:44:0
VCDS-Lite Version: Release 1.2
Control Module Part Number: 037 906 025 A
  Component and/or Version: SIMOS 4S           1823
           Software Coding: 00000
            Work Shop Code: WSC 00000
                      VCID: 115536474871

3 Faults Found:
01247 -  Activated Charcoal Filter (EVAP) System Solenoid Valve 1 (N80)
30-00 -  Open or Short to Plus
00625 -  Vehicle Speed Signal
        16-00 -  Signal Outside Specifications
00537 -  Lambda (Oxygen Sensor) Regulation
        18-10 -  Upper Limit - Intermittent

Sometimes I get a Lower Limit error on the Lambda.

As far as I've understood the Lambda isn't the culprit when the engine is cold, but could be the reason for unstable idle when the engine is hot.

I have a suspision to the TB, but how do I test it?
When pushing the "butterfly" with the fingers it can move a bit, is this normal?

Any suggestions as to what I should look at next?
