sump repair?

so my first post is going to be a bad one i guess. but hey how is everyone?

so for a month or 2 my sump plug has been leaking and ofcorse there are a few different fixes. but i have found some helicoil type sump repair kits on google.

im presuming the mk4 golf's sump plug is the m14 x 1.5 ? and if so dose this mean i need to use the m15x1.5 tap ?
and it seems they don't come with a drill bit dose this mean the sump hole dose not need drilling first?

VW use mostly M14x1.5 for oil drain plugs.

you can cut a M15x1.5 straight into a more or less stripped M14x1.5, but I would try to follow the thread....
If it is very worn go for M16x1.5

For cutting the new thread take the sump off.... otherwise you'll have metal scraping in the pan which is not good.

so i wont need to use a drill on it first?

how hard is it to take the sump off i don't have access to a ramp just a jack and axle stands.
i was thinking, i have a very powerful magnet just stick that to the side to try drag the swarf off then just flush it a few times before filling it up.

no need to drill first.... if you strip a M14 the hole is 14 (or even larger), that probably is around the core diameter for a M15, if not M16.... plus it's aluminium, any decent thread cutter can deal with that.

sump will depend what engine you have....
mk4 sumps are aluminium, what exactly are you trying to get out with a magnet?
also flushing will not work since cutting thread will create quite a burr on inside.... holding back oil and debris

ahh okay that makes that a bit eseyer.

its a 1999 1.8T defiantly a aluminium sump though and the magnet was to try and catch the scrap metal and pull it back through the hole? was just a idea.

Might be better in the long run to replace the sump, you don't really want the drain plug falling out.
