Engine transplant - from a 100bhp TDI??
« on: 02 April 2013, 19:45 »
Brother has the 100bhp TDI & he said earlier he was thinking an engine transplant may be cheaper than buying a new car outright.

I don't think he's too keen on anything that sups a lot of juice (so R32 engine & the like would be out the window ... i think).

The obvious upgrade would be to a GT TDI 150 engine & then map it.

Is there anything else that you could throw in there easy enough & relatively cheap enough?

How much work is involved in switching to the GT TDI 150? While the engine is out, does anything else need replacing? Is it wise to upgrade certain other components while you have access?
He mentioned the TDI 170bhp. Isn't this from the MK5 Golf? I imagine there'd be a fair bit more work fitting that in than the GT TDI 150 from the MK4?

The GT TDI 150 (ARL) engine would be an easy transplant! :)

I think just lump out, lump in with the neccasary ecu's etc..

Uprate the clutch whilst you have it out though!! Definately worth it if your mapping it, mine took 300 miles to bed in, and thats not fully :P

Cheers fella.

Is that it really? Don't need to mess about with electrics etc?

1. Uprating the clutch - range of cost & where would you source from?
2. What would be a reasonable price for a GT TDI 150 engine? We don't have to be talking mint with zero miles on. I think my brothers current TDI has covered 125k miles.

I reckon your best source for both of these is Ebay, I would definately go for a Sachs clutch :)

I just paid £300 for a new Dual mass Flywheel and clutch kit, it was just a standard kit and it's doing fine after being bed in, but it depends how much power your wanting to run? Im running 200bhp (Can't remember torque)

Going to be a bit more involved to fit a TDI 150 I suspect you will have to change engine loom plus a lot of other parts as well.

if you put the 150hp engine in, youll want the 6 speed box and drive shafts too really. for a clutch go to a site called darkside developments, they are a diesel tuning specailist
i think i love you.....
