ok here goes, (i have no idea about laptops ect at all.)

ive done a little research and what i understand the intel pentium processors are older, and the core i3/i5/i7 ones are newer, however when ive looked the newer ones have smaller speeds (is it speed?) i.e:

Intel® Core™ i3-3217U processor (1.8 GHz clock speed, 1066 Mhz, 3 MB cache memory)
as aposed to
Intel Pentium Dual Core B980 CPU 2.4GHz

now obviously if i was comparing a few laptops with the same type of processor ide know just to look for the highest figues :D

but with these being different, the core i3 ones all seem to have lower figures.

will the bottom still be faster ect than the topcause its got a bigger number, or will the newer technology in the top one make up for this so to speak.

as you can tell i have no idea about technology so go easy :)

any help appreciated.

cheers
paul

  • I'm kind of a big deal...
Yeah the i3 will be quite a lot faster than an older Pentium, it's more efficient architecture

sweet i was right.

as you can tell im like an OAP when it gets to technology, only just found out last month after like a year and a bit of owning my phone i can do print screens on it :D

whats the difference in them  (dont think i worded that very well but cant think how to explain )
i.e the 1.8GHz on the i3 is = ~2.0 on the pentium? 1.5 on the pentium?
what figures would be appropriate to insert into that

again thanks for any help

in terms you'll understand the imagine the i3 1.8 is a 1.8 with a supercharger and the pentium 2.0 is 2.0 8V NA although the i3 has a smaller displacement, the output is higher due to the supercharger.

in terms of comparative clockspeeds the i3 is probably about 200% faster clock for clock so lets say 3.6Ghz, I'm sure with some google searches you'll be able to find accurate figures if you really want.

:D :D

so what your saying is even though the i3 is only 1.8GHz, it would be like having a 3.0+Ghz Dual core. or somewere around there.

I think clock speeds stopped mattering a long time ago, to a degree.

I remember when the higher the ghz the better the CPU. Now 2ghz CPUs are out performing 3ghz CPUs. Crackers.

  • Know there's something burning over there...
visit a website called Toms Hardware, check out the CPU comparison charts. This will give you performance figures in black and white  :nerd:

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Along with Tom's Hardware as Chris has said, I find CPU Benchmark a great site to compare CPU's. As a system builder you can compare the value for money, I.E you can get a CPU which costs more but might do the same as a cheaper one, or a cheaper one that is better than a more expensive one.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.
