Mk3 GTi 8V owner from Whitby.
« on: 09 February 2013, 18:32 »
Hello,

I've owned my GTi for 3 and a half years now. I bought from my brothers garage for £300 as an MOT failure. It cost me a couple of ton to get it through its MOT, originally it was going to be a stop gap car for me, but I quickly realised what a brilliant car it is, so i've kept it. Since i've had it the ECU died on me a couple of winters ago and I've had to do the usual things on it, new tyres, brakes, exhaust etc (not all at once mind). Its just recently passed another MOT too.

I have never been attached to a car as much as I have to my GTi. Its got 179k on the clock and it still performs well. The only down side to it is the body is looking a bit tired, bits of trim missing, a few rust spots on it, the paintwork (dark blue, almost purple looking in the sun) is looking tired too. As time permits I do plan to sort all these bits out.

Just recently though the gear change has been a bit sh!te occasionally. Trouble finding gears when changing up or down. Sometimes its no problem at all. Any ideas what it could be??.

I don't know much about cars, and i was wondering if anyone on here could help.

Thanks.

Plenty of good used parts and cars being broken for spares out there to bring your trusty mk3 back to life, look after it and it'll look after you.

i had a mk3 8v, and same started happening with my gearbox ,couple of weeks later change gear and clunk! something inside it decided it wanted to be on the outside instead and blew a nice hole through gearbox casing lol. reliable cars are the mk3 8v gti but the gearboxes are a load of rubbish, their only flaw if you ask me,getting on now in years and if gearbox is like you say, say farwell and get something a bit newer m8, got rid of mine after 4years and a replacement gearbox, got a mk4 2ish month ago and never looked back, but will never forget the old girl

Is the gearbox noisy? If not its probaly just the linkage bushes that need replaced. Repair kits can be bought off the bay for around £20. Welcome anyways!
