Switch blade key fob housings
« on: 01 February 2013, 16:37 »
Hi all,

I'm interested in knowing if any of you have swapped your key housings. I got some brand new ones (original VW parts 1J0 959 753 DJ / 9259-55) off eBay and they're not quite the same as the originals.

There are two issues with the replacements -
although they look identical, the recess where the key folds into is about 4mm too long (or just longer!) than the original and the sculpting around the shoulder of the key is also missing on the replacement (infact the whole recess is about 0.5 mm bigger around the key blade on the whole)

In addition to this, there is some difference in the profile of the key - once the new key is installed, although it's not as tight and smart as the original because of the above, it's actually sufficiently different to cause the key to snag whilst opening. That feels awful when using it!

Other than those two oddities the replacement housing is perfect.

Has anyone else noticed (and overcome) these issues? The bigger aperture isn't too important but how have you solved the problem of the grating key? There don't seem to be "alternative" housings available so I guess other users have seen this.

Thanks.

Hi, welcome to the forum, the ebay ones are copies from China and Hong Kong, they look good but in reality are not made that well as you've found out.

What I normally do is find a good used key, fit new button pad and new badge, that tidies them up

Hmm, but they have VW paperwork and part numbers :/ that's confusing.

I've actually made a very good job of mine (  ) and it works awesomely. However it took a lot of effort! Hehe.

Thanks

Trust me they are copies, VW don't sell the case seperate, it comes complete with the pcb, the part numbers on the labels on the ebay ones refers to the remote part of the key ie case and pcb, still if you need a new case then thats the only cheap option, quality varies on them and the same goes for those rubber button pads you can get on ebay.
