Buying guide for GTI and GTD?
« on: 09 January 2013, 22:55 »
As and when I start looking what should I be looking out for? Any inherent faults? I saw a video on the DSG gearbox and VBH said its not worth having it on the GTD? Anyone think its not worth it.  Im a regular on the r32oc forum and it seems to me alot of the MK5 DSG boxes blow up in the end.  Anyone had any bad experieces with theres? or are the MK6 ones new and improved?

I love my DSG and can't say I've experienced and problems as of yet!!

Its all down to personal preferences at the end of the day, yes a manual is probably a more involved drive but for the day to day drive in DSG form with the paddles you can't go wrong, it's a lot of fun!!

If you are looking at the GTD, make sure you're normal usage will give the car a good run once in a while.  The DPF fitted can clog up if it is used for a lot of short journeys as the deposits don't get burnt off.  Failure of the DPF is an expensive (and non-warranty in a lot of cases) repair.

The Mk6 is prone to front end stone chipping so worth checking that.

Other than that I would only apply the usual checks that I would to any car

I am on my third MK6 GTI (all DSG) and they have been very reliable and great cars. There is a lot of info on here about various problems people have had with their GTI's such as rattles, paint quality, DSG
Mechatronic issues etc etc.

However I must be very lucky as I have had none of these issues with mine. My MK5 did chip badly and it rattled too but managed to cure that. Overall these are really good cars but with everything nothing is perfect and they are mechanical an eventually something will go wrong.

If you want one go for it I would recommend the ED35 over the std GTI as is better equipped in std trim and has the old engine with the K04 turbo which feels quicker and a bit more exciting. However it's not as good on petrol consumption as the regular GTI.

Good luck
