cutting out when wet
« on: 25 July 2005, 13:44 »
Hello,

I am new to the site and hoping that someone will be able to help me out.

I have an R reg golf GTI 8v and when it rains and I sometimes may drive through a puddle to fast my car then cuts out, sometimes it chugs along but eventually it does cut out.  If I leave if for 5 - 10 mins it then starts fine.  I am not really an engine person so any advice would be great.

Thanks
Annah

my old A reg nova used to do that, i never found out what it was though, but it only started doing after i drove threw quite a deep ford lol and water came in threw the doors  then after that as soon as it started raining it would play up and cut out....

sounds liike your distributer is getting wet. (its the part all the spark leads plug into on the right of the engine) have a look and see if it is cracked and water can get in, if so then just go buy another, shouldn't be more than a few quid for the cap.

Hello all,

Thanks your very much for your suggestions and also explaining what bit to look at, I will check that out later and see how it's looking,  I will also try my best not to go to fast through puddles, temptation sometimes get the better of me.
I can't say the car has done bad I have done 165K and that's the only issue so far :-)

Thanks again
Annah

anyone who's ever owned a mini will be very used to this problem. like slick says it could be the dizzy cap letting the water it, or it may be perished rubber on the spark plug leads/ht lead (thats the one that goes to the ignition coil rather than to a spark plug) letting water in, make sure they're nice and tight on the spark plugs and cap too.

in my mini driving days i always carried a can of WD40 around in the car (its a bloke thing, right ?) and gave the ignition system a good spray if i saw rain coming.

Couldn't have put it better every time it rained the bonnet would be up wd40 out and spray th dissy!! in the end I put a surgical latex glove on the dizzy and cable tied it in place, five fingers and five leads snip the tips off and voila 1 waterproof dizzy!
