Clarification of Braking issues.
« on: 27 July 2005, 11:01 »
Before i purchase my items, just need to confirm a few points...

Vehicle is a 91 J mk2 Golf Gti 16v .. I am upgrading rear calipers to mk3 items , replacing handbrake cables, replacing discs and pads , replacing front discs and pads (G60 280mm)

1. I need to buy the late mk3 Gti rear calipers , will any from 8v / 16v do - what preferable yr onwards ?
2. Handbrake cables ... my cables will the longer ones anyway, so they will be fine with the mk3 calipers ?
3. I need to buy new bearings for rear as im replacing discs too ?

Thats all i need to know, the rest is easy enough ...

Brett

from what I've heard/read (on this forum somwhere), there is no need to put mk3 calipers on! Just got to make sure you keep you mk2s nice and free and easy - the stopping power is no different.

I dont want to have the trouble of keeping checking the calipers to see if they are seized etc.. where for £50 i can get some new calipers which are trouble free ( i hope ) and wont have any troubles in the future (i hope)

1. only gti's had rear discs as standard. any year will do afaik
2. 90 spec cables are right for the conversion
3. best to as getting them out and back in is a pain and they're cheap enough to do anyway

this is only from what I've learnt of the process from the various forums I visit.

yes you will need new bearing for the rear disks. the bearings sit in the rear disks. You might want to buy some bearing grease now rather than to make 2 trips to the shop.

EDIT: Buy some new caliper bolts aswel. only a few pennies from VW. old ones will be a pain to undo

am i right in saying you'll need different carriers for the front brakes to space them out for the 280mm discs? i'm pretty sure the calipers are the same but i'd check this too.

The fronts were already done when i got the car last week ... guy before me had G60 conversion done at Awesome.
Had it MOT'd this week and some issues with front braking, so i have bought new discs and pads for front too.

Car better brake good with new discs and pads all round, new fluid, new calipers on rear ... new handbrake cables too !!!!

lol...
