Few Issues with my MK4 1.8t
« on: 05 December 2012, 19:50 »
Hi Guys,
Not posted in a while on here but I have started noticing a few issues with my golf.
Before anyone says it, I have done my research and the results to me were inconclusive so I want a bit more input.
About a year ago I had a miltek cat back, cone filter, forge dv 008 and a silicone tip.

Been running fine until a few days ago. Here are the symptoms

1. Exhaust occasionaly popping/missfireing
2. Slight judder when pulling away
3. Recently when turing the engine on its revs to abuot 2000 on its own, and it needs a bit of gas from me to calm it down.

I have booked it in to get its coil packs replaced (for free) but im not 100% this will cure it, could it be the coil packs or is it worth getting MAF looked at too?

Thanks in advance.

Classic sign of your TB & MAF needing a good clean to me :)

cold weather as well so will rev high to get engine up to temp, best to just drive off as soon as you start

Exhaust popping - Did it do this prior to miltek being fitted? Does it smell like it running rich? Could be a fueling issue so maybe maf but get it plugged in first. I had a 3" custom exhuast with decat mine popped every so often so thats pretty much normal by sounds of it.

Slight judder - Depends what you by this, does it judder everytime or only when cold? Could be dual mass flywheel issue or does it have a solid flywheel conversion?

Revving high - It shouldnt rev upto 2k and need assisting to get back down, when cold it should go just above 1k then drop to around 800-900rpm.
Clean the TB this should help sort the rev issue.

I would never advise anyone to drive any car turbo, NA or charged to start a car and drive it straight away, You should atleast leave the car idle at normal rpm's before setting off and never boost the car until its upto temp. You will be surprised how something this little keeps everything happy for your engine includin the little turbo.

+1 I always ensure the revs drop before i set off and never boost untill temp is up.

Thanks for the reply mate,

To be honest she has been ok the last 2 days so could be the cold weather?

When i say judder, that might not be the best work to describe it, but its not the type of judder you get from a failing clutch, i had that type of judder in my old PUG.

I will give the TB a clean when i have the time but as i've said, she's been ok for the past 2 days so will see how we get on.
