Oil usage during running in
« on: 10 December 2012, 19:05 »
Just checked my oil and it appears to be not much above the min mark.
I know the GTi engines can use oil but I am shocked as my car has only just hit 1100 miles.

Think I can feel an email to the dealer comming in.......

Yes some do but my last 3 Golf GTI's (ED30, GTI mk6 and ED35) I have had have not used any oil during the running in period and hardly used any oil between 10k services either. Will be interesting to see what my latest one does? I put it down to not running them in just driving normally.

However the Polo GTI 6r I had used a litre in 400 miles

My Mk6 GTI doesn't use any oil. However I have two motorbikes bought from new, for some weird reason they both went through a phase of burning oil. This was at a low mileage and lasted for a few hundred miles. Since then all has been good, both bikes now use negligible amounts of oil.

bike oil lubricates engine, gearbox and clutch plus RPM's are much higher so it has a much harder time. you tend to burn oil on motorbikes alot more than cars.

my firblade used around 300ml per 1000 miles - alot of oil but within honda specs. some blade use about 500ml per 1000 miles.

my golf has only just had its first service (its done about 7800 miles) and ive only had to top the oil up once at about 5000 miles it took maybe 200ml

you've got to expect some oil consumption on a new engine

My GTi has not used any oil from new and now coming up to 3 years old. Was run in gently for the first few thousand miles in spite of the general opinion that this is not as critical as in the past. I do change the oil and filter every 6 months as it does quite a few short trips but always on the full mark at the end of every 5000 miles. All manufacturers 'acceptable tolerance' for oil usage is in my opinion far too generous to them. Needs someone to challenge this in court at some point.

I find all these differences interesting as I have done 1700 miles and when I checked my oil it was on the minimum. Being new to the marque I was quite surprised it had used so much oil. I have driven gently, I've driven it quickly, on B roads, A roads and motorways, so a bit of everything. Having had several focus I have never had to top up between services even when I had a ST with the 5 cylinder turbo charged engine.

But I suppose every engine is different, and although I don't think I have treated this car any differently from the others, its not an exact science. I'll just have to make sure I keep a closer eye on oil levels in future.

It's normal for it to use some oil during the first 2k miles or so, the usage will reduce [I put about 1 litre in my previous GTI in the first 2k miles but then it settled down and virtually didn't use any] Still don't understand why some say there's doesn't use any though - you'd think they would all be the same.

Checked mine today at 1500 miles and showing just a tiny bit below max, not worth topping up.
