Interesting write up and very similar to my thoughts when changing from my Mk 5 GTi to an ED30.

Eyeball phew thanks for info

Didnt know about this "new car tax hike", When did that happen?

I saw it on the tax disc and thougth WOW does the DVLA think i bought a supercar or something. I hadn't noticed the car tax til my own replacement disc came through with £445 on it. I thought WOW thats a bit steep

so now is it Govt squeezes more money from new reg in 1st year then it drops to something slightly more sensible in 2nd year? and by other posts £250 a year

It's always been there its part of the OTR costs regardless of what the car is the first year is always dearer.

It's my own fault for impulse buying my GTi, but in hindsight I really wish I had gone for the ED35, was completely unaware it existed :embarrassed:

We were actually in the market for an ED30 and my wife fell in love with our GTi at the dealership and here we are 7 months later with me planning K04 mods....

Great read OP

I saw a Steel Grey ED35 5 dr yesterday 62 reg, didn't like it at all, looked too fussy with the darker standard alloys  (my old black one looked much classier), but maybe it was the colour as i don't think the Steel Grey suits the mk6 in gti form imo.
GTI manual PP, now sold  :-(

Cheers Ginge

I accept now that it is and aware of OTR price. Ive had many new cars and don't recall in all the cars I've bought new over the last 12 years that it was higher 1st year.

So its a TAX on a TAX but which year then did it kick in?

Ive no recollection of this as any previous 1st year tax for new cars I've bought being so significantly different......
