should my TDI have a glowplug light??
« on: 04 November 2012, 14:33 »
Hi guys,

Have a V reg Tdi (90bhp i believe).  when turning the key in the ignition should I get an orange glow plug symbol come up for a  couple of seconds as on most diesels?

Car starts fine etc, just never seen this symbol come up.  Ive been waiting 3+ seconds before starting engine just in case though.

If it should is there specific fuse\relay responsible for this??

Cheers

if the relay has had it (109) it shouldnt run atall i think. it might be its not could enough to need it. does it not come on atall, even straight after turning igñitiôn on?
i think i love you.....

That was my understanding re the relay.  The symbol does not even flicker on for a second.  You could be right about not being cold enough but its only 3 degrees at the moment according to the cars thermometer.  Do you think the early models came without the glowplug symbol maybe?

they all have glow plugs, i have an asv which is a 110, non pd with mechanical pump as yours is and it has plugs. it could be the bulb has died or something. does it start ok or does it take a few cranks?

starts first flick everytime which is what's weird. No struggle. From what I've read elsewhere if the 109 relay is faulty the car wony start (as you suggested). Perhaps its just the bulb, and that might be a right pain to replace (right?).  As good practice I've just been waiting 3-5 seconds before turning the ignition fully.

Could it be the glow plug system is just not preheating? But surely then the car would struggle to start?

Thanks for help
