One for the plumbers..

So, I'm having some issues with the radiator in my bathroom. It's one of those chrome towel heating jobbies. Basically, when the system is on and it's running, every radiator will be hot including the radiator in my bedroom (attic) except the bathroom one (en-suite in attic).

Feeling the pipes on the radiator, they're stone cold.. BUT if I bleed that radiator from the top right for about 3-4 pints of water, eventually hot water comes through and the radiator heats up! As soon as I stop bleeding, it'll just go cold again though.

Spoken to my landlord about it, who just blamed it on the radiators in the house being mis-balanced.. I've checked them all and bleed all the system and it's not made a difference. The boiler is also less than 2 years old.


Any suggestions?! It makes no sense!!

interesting!  I'm not an official plumber so wont give any advice but it sounds like it could be pressure related. possible the hot water is coming through when you bleed it from the other radiators.
I'm sure someone will give you the answer. try ringing a plumber yourself.

Yeah, I bled the air out of it then decided to keep going (while keeping an eye on the levels on the system).

Pressure is a possibility.. A friend suggested the "in" valve and the "out" valve were on the wrong way round? But I'm not sure that makes sense!

Could be or even that you have two ins on the same rad..........You are getting temp as the water has somewhere to go
Seeing as you rent I think this will be a live with it situation unless its really simple to fix, at least from the landlords point of view as plumbers have a cost and landlords have no wallets

That's true! I'll have another word with them.. they reckon it worked fine the Winter before I moved in! They're absolute retards though.

The "two in's" seems logical though!

Sounds like a balancing problem.

Check this first. Put the heating on and turn off the other radiators with the valve. Does it get hot now? If so, some of the locksheilds (other valve that needs a spanner to turn) are incorrectly set, meaning that the flow of water is taking the easiest path back to return.

Locksheilds shouldn't necessarily be fully open. Close them all off, then open each only one turn. This will mean that the flow of water hasn't got a big enough path to short circuit to return, the flow will be force to the next radiator.

Also, the locksheild on the towel rail may not be open enough to get some flow, but the above is more likely.
