Hi Guys n Gals

had some very shocking news today, my car needs over £900 worth of work doing on the engine to get it going again. I have been trying to think of the best solution for my predicament and I think instead of having all this work done (and have no guarantee it wont brake again in a years time) is to get a reconditioned engine fitted with a 2 year guarantee, I know of a place in Kent that offer such a service but I live in Worcester and Kent is just to far, does anyone know of a place closer to myself that could help???

Regards Lee

whats wrong with your engine? fatalities are rare on pd150s, worst we tend to see is the worn cam/lifter rattle which sounds more terminal than it actually is in most cases. midland vw isn't exactly next door but closer than kent!

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to find out tomorrow what is actually wrong with the car. The mechanic that has the car did tell me yesterday over the phone but as soon as the price popped out of his mouth I felt all numb and nearly passed out

Well have spoken to the mechanic this morning and the two major problems pointed out were:- a permanent error code for the Air Mass Meter and engine note of Valve Overlap. He mentioned a few other things like that the car generating a lot of smoke from the exhaust and the engine is stuttering  :undecided: after speaking to the mechanic I know getting a recon-engine is not the route to go down because I will still need a fair bit of work on the car to get it fully fixed i.e. the Air Mass Meter etc. So it looks like I'm gonna bite the bullet and get it done.

Can you get the exact fault codes?

I'd start by simply replacing the air meter as that will cause the car to stutter and smoke more than normal.  A genuine one is approx £75-£100 on an exchange basis (you give your old one back)

I wouldn't go buying a replacement engine just yet!!!!!

Sorry don't have the exact codes, I just know what I put down in my last post. The parts that will be replaced are:-
Air Mass Meter
Camshaft
x8 Buckets
Seals

Recommended also
Cambelt
Waterpump
drivebelt
antifreeze

Plus labour costs

Ah the dreaded chocolate camshaft failure

Common problem on 150's.  The problem with a recon engine is it will depend on whats been replaced in that engine.

I'd get yours repaired as you can't guarantee what work a recon engine has had done  :undecided:

Thanks again for all your reply posts, I am going with the repairs as I have heard only good things about the Garage I'm taking it to. It's gonna cost but fingers crossed after all this work has been done I will have my car back for a lot more years to come.

Great Forum.
