I think I may be missing some things??? help!
« on: 03 October 2012, 13:17 »
I just bought this Gti 8v and whilst it seems to run fine it looks to me like it is missing a couple of things!

As you can see from the second picture I have circled firstly where the air bow is it looks like there's a sensor that's not going anywhere?
In the second circle there's the round black thing on top of the engine however there was a small pipe coming out of it on the right that didn't have anything connected to it.... Now my dad reckoned it was just a breather pipe so he put the little breather filter on it, I just wanted to make sure this was right?

I would appreciate any help possible as I am still learning about the GTI's engine

Thanks

the first thing is the air flow meter, strange that it should be unplugged and have the wiring missing, I would have thought it would cause terrible running problems. is it running the standard ecu?

edit: there looks to be some wiring coming out the back of the airbox, possibly had some sort of fix.

Hi

Thanks for the reply.... I assume it is still running the standard ecu... It seems to be running fine although never owning a mk2 before I have nothing to compare to

Hi Fella,

Yes, the round thing on top of your cover is a breather filter, there should be a breather hose connected to this.

 something like this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-GOLF-MK2-GTI-1-8-8V-BREATHER-HOSE-PIPE-PB-PF-RV-C924-/220990406663?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item33740e0007

Hope this helps pal

i don't recall what the idle speed should be exactly but there is a chance it's been messed with to try and compensate for the maf plug wire being missing, the line at the bottom of the airbox looks like a vac pipe (hard plastic) that is meant to be there, the idle speed should be at about 8/950 or somewhere like that, to get a precise rev readout use the MFA trick

if you hold the MFA button in on the wiper stalk, keep it pressed and turn ignition on, then off then on and start the car, once started release the button, now switch it to 2 on the switch on the front of the stalk, now on the display setting 2 in the menu is a digi rev counter, as you rev the car it should rise, this gives a more precise readout

As you can see from the second picture I have circled firstly where the air bow is it looks like there's a sensor that's not going anywhere?

You have circled the air flow sensor plug. It looks ok to me in the picture, its plugged in and the cables run under the air box and up over the offside suspension strut tower. This air flow sensor is there to tell the digifant injection system how much (roughly!) air is going in to the engine.

In the second circle there's the round black thing on top of the engine however there was a small pipe coming out of it on the right that didn't have anything connected to it.... Now my dad reckoned it was just a breather pipe so he put the little breather filter on it, I just wanted to make sure this was right?

Yes, dad has done fine. The circular part is often reffered to as the flying saucer. As standard, it would be rotated through 180 degrees, and have a pipe connected from it to the black boot of the air intake. The breather gives hot gasses in the engine a place to go. Originally directed into the intake system, but the wee filter fitted should do just as well, provided it dosent get blocked up.

I would appreciate any help possible as I am still learning about the GTI's engine

Thanks
