Surging?
« on: 22 September 2012, 11:10 »
8v Digifant

I have a problem with surging on my GTi, when i first start the car (hot or cold) it revs to around 2k and holds there, then i drive off, when i dip the clutch to change gear or come to a standstill the revs will hold at whatever they were when i pushed the clutch in and sometimes even creep upwards, this carries on for a few minutes then it goes back to normal with the revs falling as you would expect them too.

Is there a cold start setup on the digi which may be over compensating or even could it be the MAF?

ISV has been swapped for a known good one and blue temp sender is new genuine VW.

Any one had similar issues or have any ideas of what may be at fault?

Thanks in advance

James

James are you the guy with the black mk2 that I saw entering vindis the other day?

It just needs tinkering bud. I can have a look tomorrow if you want, you are only walking distance

Possibly mate, haven't been to vindis for a few weeks though, mines a black mk2 with white compomotives (actually made by dymag, magnesium apparently) copies on. Cheers for the offer, I'm off out with the wife most of the day tomorrow though. It's not a massive issue currently but my last mk2 ran perfectly and I'd like this one to be the same.

Very likely to be air leaks. The grommet on top of the rocker cover. Vacuum pipe off around inlet manifold.
Injector seals or rocker cover gasket.
Try the old WD40 spray idea that's been suggested on here before.
By the way. Mine revs to about 2K on start up but drops back to 850 ish after 3 or 4 minutes and I cant sort that one out so I just put up with it. Any ideas?

I get something similar for a few minutes when starting, I just assumed it was the auto choke on it as it dies away and settles down after a few minutes.  It's a strange feeling at the time right enough with the car wanting to run away and having to cover the brake and clutch :D
